CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RECIPIENTS OF THE 2011 SAVORY AWARDS

presented at the 2011 Holistic Management conference dinner in Wingham, NSW

Alison Allan and Lyn Booth from the Manning Landcare Office

Norm Smith, NSW Farmer of the Year

Felicity Carter and Jools Brady

These deserving recipients have been outstanding in their practice and promotion of Holistic Management principles

Major General Jeffery, former Governor General of Australia
endorsed the 2011 Holistic Management Conference in Wingham, NSW.

Also, read his comments on the adoption of Holistic Management principles for Australia's future soil and water conservation on pages 6 and 11 in the Thursday December 1 edition of 'the Australian'.

"You may wonder why it is that a former soldier and Governor General is getting behind this, but it is very simple. I really believe the globe is going to face a very, very major food security issue. Sixty per cent of our arable land is degraded in some form, costs for farmers' inputs are going up and the average age of our farmers is about 59. Also, there are big problems with water. Holistic Management is a very important part of the water and soil issue. Allan Savory's grazing concepts enhance soil fertility quickly and that concept is now starting to take hold right across the globe and I am delighted to see it taking place in Australia. I urge everyone to have a look at what Allan Savory has been doing and see how it may suit your system. I strongly recommend taking a Holistic Management course. I hope we will all be able to work together to really change the landscape, soil water management and regeneration process for the good of all Australians and indeed to set an example for the rest of the world."

TAFE NSW Holistic Management course

Inside Outside Management has formed a partnership with TAFE Western Division -  joint training can be held in any venue in New South Wales, provided we have enough participants. This is an exciting development.  See the diary page for dates.

The First Millimetre: Healing the Earth takes us on a journey around the world and addresses the most crucial issue of our time, how to solve global warming. “We would only have to improve carbon percentage by 1% on our 450 million hectares of agricultural soil in Australia and we could sequester all of the planet’s legacy load of carbon,” states Christine Jones, PhD.  Stanford Professor, Christopher Fields, PhD. observes, “You can think of soils as a bank account that has the capacity to really build up very large quantities of capital moving into the future.” James Hansen, PhD, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies adds, “Our agricultural practices could be modified to bring CO2 back down much more quickly.”

This groundbreaking documentary includes interviews with leading scientists as well as personal stories from farmers and ranchers on three continents to examine how carbon sequestration in top soil can not only curb global warming; but increase biodiversity and fertility, lessen the use of fertilizers and pesticides and utilize rainfall much more effectively.

The “how”, according to experts, may come from an unusual source; the hooves and mouths of domesticated animals. Emmy© Award winning filmmaker, Chris Schueler, shows how effective grazing plans in the Sonoran desert of Mexico, the almost infertile land in northern Zimbabwe and even the vast farmland in Australia as well as across the United States have changed the topsoil into a rich, productive, moisture laden land. “One of the best reclamation tools that we have found is the hoofs and mouths of our domestic animals”, says rancher Ivan Aguirre. And the results are amazing.  “I found native species of plants that normally tend to be in riparian areas, near arroyos or slightly wet areas in the desert; they are found throughout the land,” remarks forestry professor, Alfonso Gomez Lopez.

As viewers take this stunningly filmed journey around the globe, the local children talk about how important the land must be to all of us. Through their voices we grow to realize the critical nature of this message. And we come to understand: the answer is right underneath our feet. Congratulations to Holistic Management practitioner, Jeff Campbell, the 2008 winner of the National Land Carer of the Year award. Jeff was Queensland's nomination. Holistic Management practitioners, Tim and Karen Wright, represented New South Wales and the O’Briens, Holistic Management Practitioners from the Roper River Catchment in the Northern Territory were also nominated.

TIM FLANNERY SEES AN IMPORTANT ROLE FOR HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT IN CARBON SEQUESTRATION
On the ABC National’s Australia Talks program,
the 2007 Australian of the Year, eminent scientist and conservationist, Tim Flannery stated, “Holistic Management is one of the key tools at our disposal” with regard to Climate Change. In the latest Australian Quarterly Essay, Flannery further elaborates. “Where Holistic Management is practiced increases of up to 3% in soil carbon are being achieved. This happens largely because the soil is protected from erosion and grass cover increases, allowing more root growth”. Listen to the podcast

'Grass Growers' workshops are up and running and successful

Our intensive 'Grass Growers' workshops where where we combine group training with an on-farm visit to assist clients with planning and monitoring are proving to be beneficial to land managers.
The one day in class generates a great amount of energy and excitement while the half-day spent with each business on the property enables us to get personal with each business's specific requirements. The half-day enables a grazing plan to be developed for each property and a monitoring site set up and throwing a couple of darts to get the ball rolling.

Feedback from the 'Grass Growers' workshops has been very positive

"Helen and Brian,
Thank you for the opportunity to attend your Holistic Grazing Management Grass Growers Workshop.
Coming from a Holistic Medicine background, I found your workshop very
enlightening and could relate to the need to to 'think outside the box'.
Our property 'Clarence on Condamine' is situated at the headwaters of the Condamine River presents a number of environmental challenges not the least being very entrenched grazing practices.
This workshop enabled me to see the need to control stock movement and grazing time, to allow for maximizing regrowth recovery.
I would encourage other Graziers to have a look at attending one of these workshops to equip themselves with the information revealed to assist them in making future grazing management decisions/plans.
Thank you once again."

2007 / 2008 saw Inside Outside Management participating in a QMDC run project to test the effectiveness of training for graziers. The experience proved a positive one for all involved. Reviews and testimonials from our project work with the Glenmorgan / Tara group can be seen on our Client Support page

We also run  stand-alone three-day Holistic Grazing Planning® training modules. These have been successful and participants finished the training, confident in the use of grazing and animal impact as a tool and how to set about the grazing chart.
